Sleep tracking that tells you when it doesn’t know.

Most sleep apps draw you a REM band. A phone can’t measure it. Rested Well reports what it actually observed, explains every number, and says so plainly on a night it couldn’t measure.

Rested Well on an iPhone, ready to start tracking

Honest

A phone can’t see REM or deep sleep, so Rested Well doesn’t pretend to. It shows REM only when an Apple Watch measured it. A night with no usable signal gets no score — not a made-up one.

Explained

Every score is broken into four named parts, each with its weight, so you can see how the number was reached. Sleep and wake are scored with Cole–Kripke and Webster rescoring — published actigraphy methods, not a guess.

Private

No account. No server. Your nights and any audio are stored on your iPhone and never uploaded — there is nowhere to upload them to. Export a file you own whenever you like.

What a night with Rested Well looks like

Put the phone on the mattress, press Start

It works with the screen locked, all night. Plug it in, set it beside your pillow, screen up. Movement and sound are folded into one score per minute as they happen, so a whole night costs almost nothing in storage.

A smart alarm with a hard backstop

Choose a wake window and it looks for a lighter moment inside it. Whatever the sensors say, the alarm you set fires on time — even if iOS has put the app to sleep.

Sounds you can mix

Layer up to three — real recordings of rain, surf, a stream, wind, a campfire — set a volume each, and a fade-out timer. Pick a mix at bedtime and it keeps playing while your night is tracked.

The morning after, in plain words

How long it took to fall asleep, how often you woke, how loud the room was, whether you snored — each measured against your own recent nights, never against a lab average you didn’t sleep in.

Trends that lead with regularity

How consistent your bedtime is predicts how you feel at least as well as how long you slept — and it’s the one you can change tonight. A calendar, a streak, and your sleep debt, without a leaderboard.

Apple Health, both ways

Save your nights to Apple Health. If you wear an Apple Watch to bed, Rested Well reads its sleep stages — and only then will you ever see the word REM.

What a phone can and can’t measure

A 2020 polysomnography study found that none of the popular phone sleep apps reliably tell sleep from wake, and none can detect REM at all. They draw the REM band anyway. Rested Well was built the other way round: it reports awake, restless and asleep from what the phone can sense, labels a weak night as weak, and leaves the stages it cannot see off the screen entirely.

If that sounds like less, it is — less of what was never real. What’s left is something you can act on.

Questions

Where does the phone go?

On the mattress, beside your pillow, screen up, plugged in. On the same person and the same night, a phone on the mattress counted 15 awakenings; a phone on the nightstand counted none. The mattress is the difference between an app that works and one that doesn’t.

Does it work with the screen locked?

Yes. Tracking runs all night with the screen off. Keep the phone plugged in; a night of tracking is the one thing that should not be interrupted by a flat battery.

Does it record me?

The microphone listens for movement, snoring and room noise. Short clips of snoring are kept on your phone so you can hear them, and are deleted after a week. Nothing is ever uploaded; there is no server to upload to. You can turn audio off and track by movement alone.

Does it work with an Apple Watch?

You don’t need one. If you wear one to bed, Rested Well reads the watch’s sleep stages from Apple Health and shows them — including REM, because the watch measured it. Without a watch the word REM never appears.

Is it a medical device?

No. Rested Well is a consumer app that measures movement and sound. It reports what it heard — for example how many pauses in breathing it noticed — but it does not diagnose anything, and it says so wherever a number could be mistaken for a diagnosis.

Can I take my data with me?

Settings → Your data → Export writes every night to a file you own, in a format that explains itself, so it stays readable long after the app is gone.
